I would like to confirm that running this with MacTeX leads to the
correct result and running it with xelatex from MacPorts leads to the
same error (I'm using 10.7).

This reminds me on https://trac.macports.org/ticket/39334 even though
I'm not claiming that it is necessarily the same issue. But XeTeX uses
(almost) the same backend and if there are issues with dvipdfmx, it's
not strange to see (the same) buggy behaviour in xdvipdfmx.
