run fetchmail daemon as non-root user

Dear MacPorts users

I'm trying to use the fetchmail port as non-root user, following the HOWTO

   https://trac.macports.org/wiki/howto/SetupFetchmail

As long as I run it as root (using the daemondo mechanism), everything is fine. I also created user and group as in the howto, and tried both to modify the daemondo plist script (as it is part of the port) to run as _fetchmail user, and I also tried to use the launchd script from the howto, but both fail to start the daemon.

The configuration seems to be ok, since I can start fetchmail daemon as _fetchmail user manually from the command line.

Anybody with similar experience, or ideas where to look for the problem?
