A question about MAMP

In the MaMP instructions - https://trac.macports.org/wiki/howto/MAMP - the statement is made concerning Secure Sockets:

    "Secure Sockets (https)

    This works for a development system (not recommended for production!)."


My question is simple -- What does the parenthetical part of that sentence mean - (not recommended for production!)?
