Can we verify that there is not another copy of GIMP.app in your users folder somewhere? Try running:
find ~ -name GIMP.app 2>/dev/null
The error message was pretty clear that the application is in /Users.
I assume "/Users/USER/*" is an anonymization OS X does on user paths in logs or at least crash reports.
