By the way, this implies you think programs have some right to be aware of
what $DISPLAY has in it, and/or should be able to randomly mess with it? I
think that limits future expansion --- as, indeed, it did back when
protocols other than TCP (most notably unix sockets --- and stupid programs
that thought they needed to deal with those somehow are exactly where this
kind of bug comes from!) were added.
