what was up with ntp again?

Huh. Older OS X has /etc as a symlink to /private/etc.

    pyanfar:10292 Z$ ls -ld /etc
    lrwxr-xr-x@ 1 root  wheel  11 Jun 28  2014 /etc@ -> private/etc

But it does appear that it's actualy (/private)/var/db/ntp.drift, sorry.
(This is probably a good thing.)
