Opening X applications from terminal.app

OK, I tried that: 

1. launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.macosforge.xquartz.startx.plist
2. Reinstall XQuartz from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/ <http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/>
3. Reboot

I still get the same behavior:

From terminal.app:
~]$ xmgrace
Can't open display
Failed initializing GUI, exiting
$ echo $DISPLAY
               (==> just a blank line)
~]$

From XQuartz xterm application:
~]$ echo $DISPLAY
:0
~]$ xmgrace
(opens Grace normally)

Did I miss any step?
