`man groff_char' misbehaving

I see the following output from `man groff_char' with version 1.22.3 of
`groff' under macos 10.10.5:

/usr/bin/tbl:<standard input>:294: unrecognised format `O'
/usr/bin/tbl:<standard input>:294: giving up on this table

(many more similar lines following)

and the finally appearing manpage indeed does not contain the tables
listing the glyphs as it should. any ideas?
