Why do so many builds fail?

An update was committed last evening (r146463) which seemed to work on initial testing but now is failing on El Capitan
only AFAICT.  Builds OK on Yosemite and Mavericks according to the buildbots.  We (the port maintainers) are working on
the issue and hope to have it fixed shortly.
