Xsane on Sierra

I have an oldish SANE-compatible USB scanner here, and Xsane (0.996) 
worked fine until Sierra; the device is now no longer found, but it shows 
up in System Information -> USB as "Perfection1240" from Seiko Epson Corp.

The scanner is visible on my Penguin box (Debian 8.something), but it's 
more convenient to use the MacBook as it's right next to the scanner.

Did something change in Sierra that broke the API or something?
