Running X11 in MacOS-window-as-X11-display mode?

At least on Catalina where I tried recently, it takes over whichever one you start an X11 client program in (if there were none open at that time, hiding the Mac apps behind it in that desktop. I suppose if you got that to happen in an otherwise empty desktop (or used the dock icon's Options->Assign to this desktop), it wouldn't be hiding anything of note, except the usual desktop background and the icons on it.

It's just not very elegant like that; it doesn't create a new desktop.
