Using a branch in my overlay port

Hello,

When I overlay a port and use git to get the files, it appears the port is
not able to use a branch as it only retrieves the master branch. There is
no indication that this is happening other than when I go into the git
directory the checked out branch is master and I can't switch to the branch
I want to use.

Has anyone seen this or am I missing something?
