XV and GV hanging

Sounds about right (it used to work).

It hangs as well...

I ran "startx", and the applications still hang.

I even rebooted the Mac (it was up for nearly 3 weeks!), to no effect.

I took a coredump of one process (with CTL-\) and then found that GDB 
won't compile (a separate issue which I'm looking at -- it used to work 
too)...
