Poppler won't build on Mac OS X 10.3.9

There are trak items for this issue but it seems to be setting
fallow for a while and this is leaving me unable to install gimp.
Has anybody any clue how to work around poppler not building so
that I can get on with trying to install gimp on my Mac?
