Yes, MacPorts works on 10.4 PPC. Yes, some ports need 10.5 (not many at
present). Yes, we will most likely abandon PPC one day, probably at the
same time we drop support for 10.5, which is to say, not for quite a
while yet.
Our policy is to try to support the two latest OS X releases. Panther
has therefore been unsupported for some time, but still works as of
MacPorts 1.7. (MacPorts 1.8 will no longer work on Panther.) When Snow
Leopard ships in September, Tiger will become unsupported as per policy.
Like Panther, though, it will probably more or less work for quite a
while still.
