Sébastien,

You are correct. The symlinks that the *_select programs (and port select) create are for your convenience as a user. They are not for ports to use, and ports that break depending on what you have python_select'd (or gcc_select'd or whatever) need to be fixed to use the specific version of python or gcc or whatever that they want. The gcc case is described in the wiki page UsingTheRightCompiler; extrapolate from there for the other *_selects.
