You should have kept an empty no_x11 variant -- which would be programmed to cause the x11 variant not to be selected by default -- for one year, to facilitate upgrades for users who had previously indicated their desire to omit X11 support by selecting that variant. See:

For examples of how to do this, see any other port that has had its no_x11 variant turned into an x11 variant within the last year.
