The notes are just a string (or set of strings) that are registered, presumably 
in the registry but possibly computed from the (registry) Portfile and displayed 
in some post-activate phase.

Any variant-specific nature would be inherited automatically if this procedure 
were made accessible through the port driver. Be it just for the active 
installed port, or via a selection mechanism as with port de/activate or port 
uninstall.
