 After uninstalling and re-installing (either from source or the binary
 file) I do now see the same issue on macOS Mojave as well. I am convinced
 it worked before for me (and py38-matplotlib is still fine), but at least
 I can reproduce it now - admittedly I still don't know how to fix it
 though.
