 Ah I see. When you said upstream I didn't realize you meant "the current
 version on PyPI/GitHub". I upgraded to ipython 8.29.0, the latest release,
 and indeed I can now use the `MacOSX` backend. However, rebuilding the
 matplotlib font cache every time I issue `ipython --pylab` is still
 happening.
