python 2.4 malloc issues [breaks several ports]

I am finding that the last lingering errors in my re-install of
MacPorts, specifically the gnome environment, are all to do with
python 2.4.

I see a lot of these:

Python(567) malloc: *** vm_allocate(size=1069056) failed (error code=3)
Python(567) malloc: *** error: can't allocate region
Python(567) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug
Python(567) malloc: *** vm_allocate(size=1069056) failed (error code=3)
Python(567) malloc: *** error: can't allocate region
Python(567) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug
(null)Python(567) malloc: *** vm_allocate(size=1069056) failed (error
code=3)

python has no maintainer, since it seems pretty well-supported
upstream. Does anyone have more familiarity with it or some contacts
within the python development community who could look at this?

build log attached.
