That's an odd conclusion to reach, considering that someone has to maintain
all those dependencies....

I submit that you have never tried to maintain a large number of software
packages across a large number of systems.  I do so as part of my day job,
and indeed we build our own dependencies so that things match up as much as
possible between platforms (several Linux and Solaris releases currently;
this has also included AIX and Tru64) to simply building and debugging.  (I
would also add that "you don't do the things that are most convenient for
me!" is not laziness on the part of MacPorts maintainers.)
