If I want to understand what is going on, it probably helps to know the background. And I guess the fact that apple-gcc42 is selected is related to the blacklisting woodoo. So thanks for the detailed answer!

However, the command you are proposing fails:

Any idea what is going on here? Might this be an error in base?

Trying to install clang-3.3 manually and see what happens then.
