Actually, something very strange is going on with gsed. The archive contains:

-rwxrwxr-x bertin/admin 172528 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/bin/gsed
lrwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2014-01-23 18:53 opt/local/libexec/gnubin/man/man1/sed.1.gz -> /opt/local/share/man/man1/gsed.1.gz
lrwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2014-01-23 18:53 opt/local/libexec/gnubin/sed -> /opt/local/bin/gsed
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin      0 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/doc/gsed/AUTHORS
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin      0 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/doc/gsed/BUGS
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin      0 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/doc/gsed/COPYING
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin      0 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/doc/gsed/ChangeLog
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin      0 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/doc/gsed/NEWS
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin      0 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/doc/gsed/README
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin      0 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/doc/gsed/THANKS
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin 100872 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/info/gsed.info
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin  10475 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/sed.mo
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin   9987 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/locale/nl/LC_MESSAGES/sed.mo
-rw-rw-r-- bertin/admin   3856 2012-12-24 18:54 opt/local/share/man/man1/gsed.1.gz

and that corresponds to what I have in ${prefix}. However, on a backup from last October 18th, I don't have a gsed port at all, so no archive in macports/software.
So, in this particular case, rather than me having deleted a port archive tarball, it looks more like the whole gsed port has been created since I last did a selfupdate?

Or is it "simply" that the image to archive conversion cited earlier never happened on my setup, for instance because my /opt/local is a symlink (and possibly related to the fact that `port provides` doesn't work for me)?

In any case, the selfupdate is now finished, minus any of the ports I'm shadowing with local Portfiles ... the whole thing didn't even take 12h this time :-/

R.
