I'm not comfortable with making MacPorts users involuntary testers for unofficial code in a fundamental library like zlib. Maybe you can include it in your own private copy of zlib, and based on your experiences running that, you can make recommendations to the developers. But if the developers don't believe it should be included, then I don't feel we should second-guess them.
