As an apparent minority user of both Macports and MacUpdater as well as a former subscriber to MacUpdate Desktop, I can heartedly confirm everything you said, and add that the developer is easy to work with (I do so almost weekly) compared to those at MacUpdate. I have never had any MacPorts conflicts, so cannot speak to that. I abandoned Homebrew years ago and MacUpdate about a year ago.
